bandh: This Week in Photography History: Death of Eadweard Muybridge, pioneer of motion photography, on May 8, 1904. He created the first set of stereoscopic images, The Horse In Motion, to settle a bet of a former governor of California as to whether a horse lifts all four hooves off the ground while trotting or galloping. To get the shots, he lined the horse’s path with cameras triggered by threads, and ran white sheets down the other side of the path for maximum light reflection. He then created a movie projector to display the horse’s motion. Muybridge continued creating motion pictures of animals and people while studying the science of motion, and contributed to the field of biomechanics and athletic performance through his photographic work.
